At Northwoods Survival we provide instruction in: wilderness survival, bushcraft and self-reliant living skills. During the winter months; we also offer guided dog sledding trips. The items listed below will give you and idea of what the courses consist of. We strive to only teach attainable and practical skills and our guided trips are scheduled to leave time to enjoy your surroundings.

Wilderness Survival

Learn to thrive with practical wilderness survival techniques.
During these courses we cover the following subjects:

-Survival planning and the survival mindset

-Building and using an effective survival kit

-Firecraft and how to make fire under the most adverse weather conditions

-Navigation with and without a map and compass

-Sheltercraft and how to stay warm and dry

-Signaling and why things are seen

-Locating and purifying water

-Wild edibles and building simple traps and snares

-Useful but simple knots and lashings

Bushcraft & Woodslore
Learn the skills used by the old sourdoughs, trappers and timber cruisers. During this workshop we cover knife, axe and saw use, outdoor gear, knots and their uses, navigation, building a "siwash camp", firecraft and outdoor cooking.

Fly Fishing Basics & Reading a Stream
Learn the basics of fly casting, fly fishing gear and how to read a river so that you can understand whats going on below the water's surface and why.

Basic Canoeing & Canoe Poling
Learn the basic skills required to safely maneuver a canoe with both paddle and pole.

Dog Sledding
Learn proper dog care and the basics of mushing a dog team in New Brunswick's beautiful north woods.


Workshop Details

Timings and Meals

Single day workshops are conducted between 0900hrs and 1630hrs.
Multiple day workshops begin at 0900hrs on the first day and end at 1600hrs on the last day. During the evenings; we usually do some stargazing and sit by a fire to discuss the day and answer questions.

During our multiple day workshops breakfast, lunch & supper meals are provided. Multiple day workshops will have on-site overnight accommodation options. (additional fees may apply)

 

Registration

To book a workshop for yourself or your group, contact us for available dates and information. We have a 2-person minimum and an 12 person maximum for all workshops. An adult must accompany children under the age of 16.
10 day pre-registration and a non-refundable deposit of 25% of the course fee is required for each workshop/event per participant.

Rates

To book Jeff for a speaking engagement the fee is $250/day; plus travel expenses and meals. If you would like to hire Jeff for a multi-day event accommodations are in addition to fees and travel.

To book Shannon for a speaking engagement the fee is $150/day; plus travel expenses and meals.

If you are a non-profit organization or a public school please contact us to discuss rates.

Liability

Because of the nature of the training that we provide and the environment in which we provide it, there is a small but real chance of injury. Therefore, before the start of each course all participants are required to sign an Acknowledgement of Risk form.

A reasonable level of physical fitness by our customers is also required and assumed.

Remember that we are providing practical wilderness skills training in a wilderness environment. To remove all risk would be to remove the wilderness experience.
